Tony Macarena

Tony Macarena is a design duo founded by Lorena Canales and Alejandro Olávarri. They practice in the intersection between hegemonic aesthetics, the commercialization of culture and the production of identity politics, adddressing neo-colonizing and decolonizing dynamics, national representation and self-exotization.

Tony (Lorena Canales) is a curator and teacher from Guadalajara and Macarena (Alejandro Olávarri) is a designer and plant enthusiast from Mexico City. Tony has a master’s degree in Design, Research, Writing and Criticism from SVA 2016 and currently coordinates curatorial intentions at a new museum in Iztapalapa. Tony is currently exploring pedagogies and performance in classroom settings and other creative processes. Macarena has a Masters in Arts and Politics from Sciences Po 2022. Macarena is currently exploring the relationships between the aesthetics of the world’s habitability and the politics of other living beings.
