INDEPENDENT ART FAIR 2018

November 8, 2018 - November 11, 2018

Brussels, Belgium

For its inaugural presentation at Independent Brussels, Friedman Benda will juxtapose the work of two emerging voices in their multi-generational, international program: Najla El Zein and Jonathan Trayte.

Previewing work for Najla El Zein’s upcoming first solo exhibition, Transition, opening March 2019 at Friedman Benda, this presentation marks the debut of the Fragmented Pillar series. Through this body of work, El Zein explores the physical and emotional disorder experienced through the disturbance of one’s foundation. Composed of plaster and sand, these organic silhouettes in light subdued hues form a dreamy, almost-ethereal landscape.

In contrast, this exhibition includes new works by Jonathan Trayte. Informed by his background in fine art sculpture, and broad experience in other fields – including as a chef and foundry metal worker – Trayte incorporates a wide range of materials, methods and processes. Reinterpreting modern consumer behavior, his designs investigate the psychology of personal desire and cultural habits.
